Valley House

This project involved proposals for the rescue and conversion of a grade II listed building ruin. The site is part of a Scheduled Ancient Monument of Iron works, home to a colony of rare Horseshoe Bats and Someset Cap plants, and within the flood plain. Despite the planning and practical difficulties with developing the site, our design united Natural England, Historic England, Environment Agency and local Council in fully supporting this scheme.
Our approach is to fully restore the main building, while treating flanking ruins 'as found' with contemporary extensions overlooking the river and approach. The plan includes an upside down arrangement of open plan first floor living spaces making the most of the daylight and views in the steep sided valley.
